To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many(a) men and (b) women have been convicted of child cruelty in courts in England and Wales in each of the last five years;

(2) how many (a) men and (b) women have been sent to prison for cruelty to children in each of the last five years.

Information held centrally for 1983 to 1987 on the specific offence of child cruelty is given in the table. Data for 1988 are not yet available. Many other convictions take place each year for offences of violence against children or sexual offences against children.
