HC Deb 20 July 1989 vol 157 c275W
11. Mr. Bill Walker

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will report on progress on the talks to improve democratic representation in local government in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Tom King

Over recent months we have been exploring with politicians and others their ideas about how local elected representatives might be more fully involved in the administration of Northern Ireland. These discussions are continuing and I hope that the political parties will also discuss their ideas together.

13. Sir Michael McNair-Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what inquiries into the efficiency and powers of the local government of the Province have taken place since the MacCrory report.

14. Mr. Adams

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he intends to proceed with changes in the operation of local government in Northern Ireland.

21. Mr. McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on his plans for local government in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Needham

Two efficiency studies covering energy management and the provision of leisure services have been undertaken recently. Proposals for improving the general efficiency and effectiveness of local government were published last November. We are now considering 60 or so responses.
