Public Sector Debt

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the sterling component of the net public sector debt outstanding at(a) the end of December 1988; and (b) the end of the financial year 1988–89.

Figures for public sector financial assets and liabilities at the end of December 1988 will be published in "Financial Statistics" for September as part of a breakdown of financial assets and liabilities for each main sector in the economy. These data do not identify the sterling component explicitly. The net public sector debt at the end of March 1989 will be published in theBank of England Quarterly Bulletin for November. From these data it will be possible to make an estimate of the sterling component.
