Mr. John P. Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current estimated number of trade union safety representatives as defined by the 1977 Safety Representatives and Safety Committee Regulations under the Health and Safety at Work, etc Act; and what was the number in 1978.

Mr. Nicholls

The health and Safety Executive does not keep records of the number of trade union safety representatives, but the Trades Union Congress currently estimates the numbers to be between 90,000 and 100,000.

My right hon Friend has no reason to believe that this number has changed significantly since 1978.
