§ Viscount Craigavonasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they agree with the aim stated in the United Nations Fund for Population Activities State of the World Population report 1989 (p.29) that family planning should be made a clear development priority and that there should be a five-fold increase in international assistance for family planning by the year 2000.
§ The Minister of State for Defence Procurement (Lord Trefgarne)The report's central theme, which Her Majesty's Government support, is the need to promote conditions which allow women to play their full part in the development process. How this challenge is met in individual countries will not depend solely on the availability of financial assistance but also on important social, cultural and management factors. Her Majesty's Government will continue to deliver a substantial and effective aid programme designed to stimulate both economic and social development and to alleviate poverty. Our support for population-related activities will remain an important part of this work. It has grown from £5£4 million in 1977 to £15£9 million in 1987.
