To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what measures his Department is taking to reduce car crime in England and Wales; and if he will make a statement.

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply that I gave to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Stockton, South (Mr. Devlin) on 15 June at column510.

It is encouraging that in the 12 months ending March 1989 recorded offences of theft from vehicles fell by 9 per cent. compared to the corresponding period last year, and offences of theft or unauthorised taking of a vehicle fell by 6 per cent.
