HC Deb 05 July 1989 vol 156 c174W
Mr. Canavan

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent discussions he had had with representatives of the Government of Hong Kong; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

My right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs visited Hong Kong from 2 to 4 July. During his visit he met the Governor, senior officials and representatives of the community of Hong Kong. Their discussions covered the range of current issues in Hong Kong, including recent developments in China and their implications for Hong Kong.

Mr. Cran

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has to meet with his European Community counterparts to discuss the future of Hong Kong citizens.

Mr. Eggar

My right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs has already discussed this matter with his EC colleagues at the recent meeting of the European Council in Madrid. We will continue to urge the international community to join us in doing everything possible to restore the confidence of people in Hong Kong following the recent appalling events in China.
