HC Deb 31 January 1989 vol 146 c171W
67. Mr. Madel

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he is planning to introduce any proposals for teacher training in 1989; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

In the near future, my right hon. Friend will be announcing his decision on the outcome of the consultation on the proposals for the reform of on-standard routes into teaching; the aggregate intake numbers for initial teacher training for 1990, together with the split between sectors, undergraduate and postgraduate courses, phases and secondary phase subjects—and later the proposed distribution between institutions in the PCFC sector; his proposals for the approval of courses of initial teacher training when the term of office of the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education expires at the end of 1989; his proposals for the national priority areas in the LEA training grant scheme for 1990–91. In addition, the Government keep under constant review the scope for encouraging innovatory developments in teacher training designed to enhance the quality of the teaching force and help to meet the demand for teachers.
