HC Deb 31 January 1989 vol 146 c110W
Mr. Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the South African Government about the detention and torture of children in South African prisons.

Mrs. Chalker

We have made frequent representations to the South African Government, both bilaterally and with our European partners, to express our concern about human rights abuses including reports of maltreatment of both children and adults. We have made clear our view that the South African Government should release all those detained without charge.
