§ Mr. SimsTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many United States students have taken temporary employment in the United Kingdom under the student exchange employment programme in the most recent 12-month period for which figures are available; and how many British students worked in the United States of America under the same programme during that period.
§ Mr. LeeIn 1988, a total of 4,122 United States students came to the United Kingdom under the British Universities North America Club student exchange programme which allows those taking part to take up temporary employment. In the same period 8,684 British students went to the United States of America under the same programme. It is not known how many students actually took up jobs.
