Generally, the number of appeals allowed is estimated to represent some 1 per cent. of over 600,000 planning applications submitted in a year. Between 1 January and 31 October 1988 (the latest date for which information is available), 16,977 planning appeals were determined, of which 6,375 were allowed. The average length of time between the date the application was made to the local planning authority and final approval following the appeal, for these 6,375 cases, was 54 weeks.
