HL Deb 23 January 1989 vol 503 c585WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the information available to them supports the view that nuclear fusion is, when available, likely to be a "clean" form of energy, and whether in their view market forces are likely to be sufficient to fund the necessary research and development.

Baroness Hooper

Work on fusion, both in the UK and elsewhere, is still at the early stage of establishing whether it is a scientifically feasible source of power generation. Studies suggest that a successful fusion reactor could have some environmental advantages, in that no high level radioactive waste is likely to be created, but as yet there is no complete assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of fusion as a source of power.
