To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has had about the 1989 North sea cod quotas; and if he will make a statement.

I took full account of the views of the Members of this House and the industry when I gave my agreement to the total allowable catch (TAC) for cod in 1989 at the December Fisheries Council. I made quite clear that this agreement was subject to the TAC being reviewed if the biological assessment of the Advisory Committee on Fisheries Management in May 1989 indicates that this might be appropriate.
