To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many significant train accidents per million train miles there were in 1986 and 1987; and if he will make a statement.

A significant train accident is one that is actually or potentially most dangerous to passengers.

In 1986 the significant accident rate was 0.69 per million train miles and in 1987 it was 0.71 per million train miles.
