To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he anticipates announcing the preferred option for the western orbital route extension to the M42 to the west of the west midlands conurbation.

The work of evaluating the large response to the public consultation is progressing well. We hope to achieve the spring 1989 target for an announcement.
