HC Deb 10 January 1989 vol 144 cc472-3W
Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether he intends to introduce legislation to ensure the use of packaging materials designed for re-use and recycling.

Mr. Forth

The Department has no plans to introduce legislation to ensure the use of packaging materials designed for re-use and recycling.

Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what initiatives his Department is taking to encourage the production of recyclable materials and returnable packaging.

Mr. Forth

The DTI commissioned research in 1985 on design for recyclability. A report on the study which took two years to complete has recently been published and industry's response is awaited. Assistance on design and manufacturing is available under the Department's enterprise initiative.

Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what initiatives his Department is taking to encourage industry to invest in recycling processes.

Mr. Forth

The Department has undertaken a campaign built around a specially prepared video to make industry aware of the potential benefits of investing in recycling. In conjunction with this, there is a programme involving officials talking to selected groups which have a direct interest in waste management, making presentations to chambers of commerce and addressing conferences.
