Mr. Simon HughesTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he has any plans to introduce legislation to prevent local authorities from appointing nominees from one political party for all places as school governors; and what representations he has received concerning local authorities which have done this.
§ Mrs. RumboldThe Government have received various representations on this matter and has consistently stated that those authorities which nominate only majority party supporters as school governors are not behaving as their electorates would expect. We hope that they can be persuaded to adopt a fairer approach. We are not convinced that this is an appropriate matter for legislation.
