HC Deb 24 February 1989 vol 147 c803W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will specify the assumptions about the amount of non-class contact time for(a) primary teachers and (b) secondary teachers that are made for the purpose of the Department's desired number of teachers referred to in annex E(v) of the evidence submitted to the Select Committee on Education, Science and the Arts.

Mrs. Rumbold

The highly tentative demand projection set out in the Department's memorandum to the Education, Science and Arts Committee is based on the illustrative assumption that the overall pupil to teacher ratio will remain at its recent level of 17:1. This would be consistent with the contact ratios of about their present levels of 0.76 in secondary schools and 0.89 in primary schools.
