§ Mr. David YoungTo ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will indicate what action his Department is taking to encourage British industry to stop emissions that affect the ozone layer; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Maude[holding answer 21 February 1989]Officials from my Department are in regular contact with producers and users of ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to consider what measures industry can take to meet the targets for CFC reductions set by the Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. Before emissions can be stopped completely, practicable and safe alternative substances, products and processes need to be developed. It is open to companies to make full use of the assistance available under schemes operated by my Department, against the relevant criteria.
