To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether he will initiate an inquiry into the concentration of power in the betting industry.

[holding answer 17 February 1989]: It falls to the Director General of Fair Trading in the first instance to keep competition in the United Kingdom economy under review. I understand that he is continuing to monitor developments in the betting industry under the competition legislation for which he is responsible.
