To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has had about the effect of the imposition of value added tax on hospital radio equipment; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 17 February 1989] : My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer has received a number of representations since the reply I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Basildon (Mr. Amess) on 27 October at column 447.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, pursuant to his answer of 6 February,Official Report, column 548, on value added tax zero rates, if he will list those matters still under discussion.

[holding answer 16 February 1989] : The principal matter still under discussion with trade representatives is the question whether gas and electricity bills below a certain level should be eligible automatically for zero-rating, in the same way as is proposed for certain small scale deliveries of coal, oil and liquified petroleum gas. Interested trade and professional bodies have also been asked for technical comments on the draft legislation.
