HL Deb 20 February 1989 vol 504 cc495-6WA
Lord Burton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether an instruction has gone to National Health Service hospitals that they are not to use fresh eggs.

The Earl of Arran

The Department of Health has not asked National Health Service hospitals to stop using fresh eggs. However, in Executive Letter (88)P/136 issued to health authorities on 29th July 1988, the department asked general managers to ensure that pasteurised egg was substituted for raw egg in all uncooked dishes. The department also said that using raw shell egg as a binder for sandwiches should cease, as should nursing practices involving raw eggs.
