HC Deb 20 February 1989 vol 147 cc462-3W
Ms. Walley

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will take steps to end the use of synthetic chemicals in the manufacture of disposable nappies which are similar to those used in sanitary tampons removed from sale in the United States of America because of their association with toxic shock syndrome in consumers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Forth

No. Toxic shock syndrome is not a problem with babies. However, I will ask the industry which chemicals are added to disposable nappies and this information will be considered by our toxicologists.

Ms. Walley

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if his Department will actively promote the use of chlorine-free paper pulp in the manufacture of disposable nappies.

Mr. Forth

The brand leaders have gone over to unbleached disposable nappies and the remainder of the industry is likely to follow. It is a good example of the market responding to consumer preferences.
