HC Deb 20 February 1989 vol 147 c446W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will take steps to ensure that the World Bank does not make loans for projects which, if carried out, would be likely to cause environmental or rain forest damage in Amazonia.

Mr. Eggar

Environmental concerns now receive considerable attention in the World Bank, due in part to the efforts of the United Kingdom and several other members. The reorganisation of the bank in 1987 strengthened its capacity to ensure that environmental costs and benefits are systematically addressed in project appraisal.
