Mr. Cousins

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what amount of public sector debt was(a) created and (b) repaid in each of the last five financial years, and if he will give an estimate for 1988–89.

Figures for the creation and the repayment of all public sector debt instruments are not readily available. However, figures for official sales and redemptions of Government marketable securities are given in table 3.5 of "Financial Statistics" (published by the CSO).
