To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total revenue from value added tax on fuel in 1987–88; and what is the estimated revenue for 1988–89.

[holding answer 14 February 1989]The total VAT revenue on road fuel for 1987–88 is estimated from consumers' expenditure statistics to have been £1 billion. An estimate for 1988–89 is not available.
