HC Deb 15 February 1989 vol 147 cc205-6W
Mr. Andrew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many responses he has now received to the "Top-up Loans for Students" White Paper; how many of these were supportive and how many opposed; and if he will place the responses in the Library.

Mr. Jackson

My right hon. Friend has received some 140 formal responses to the White Paper, expressing a variety of views. It is for the persons and bodies who have responded to decide whether they wish to make their views available to the House. The responses have given us no reason to believe that our plans are not well-judged. We have had helpful views and suggestions on matters on which we particularly sought comment. We shall take these into account as we proceed in our discussions with financial institutions and other bodies to develop a top-up loans scheme for introduction in the autumn of 1990.

Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has had from Manchester Education Committee in regard to his White Paper "Top-up Loans for Students"; what reply he is sending; if there is any action he will be taking; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Jackson

My right hon. Friend has received a letter from the chairman of Manchester Education Committee, which he is considering with all the other responses to the White Paper.
