To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners are remand prisoners.

On 31 December 1988 there were about 8,850 untried and 1,490 convicted unsentenced prisoners in prison service establishments in England and Wales. A further 87 prisoners, most of whom were on remand, were held in police cells.

On 10 February 1989, 48,925 prisoners were held in prison service establishments in England and Wales. A further 209 prisoners were held in police cells.
