HC Deb 15 February 1989 vol 147 c273W
Mr. Butler

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the progress made in improving the housing stock since 1981.

Mr. Trippier

The results of the 1986 English house condition survey, published in November last year, showed that, overall, the conditions of the stock had improved since the last survey in 1981. Less than 3 per cent. of the stock lacked basic amenities compared with 5 per cent. in 1981. The proportion of the stock classified as unfit had been reduced from 6.3 per cent. to 5.6 per cent. The proportion in serious disrepair had remained broadly the same at about 6 per cent.

A copy of the report of the survey is available in the Library.
