HC Deb 15 February 1989 vol 147 c209W
Mr. David Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to which member states of the European Economic Community provide free transport for(a) pensioners, (b) disabled people and (c) unemployed people on (i) buses and (ii) trains.

Mr. Portillo

The authorities of member states of the European Community run a variety of concessionary travel schemes for pensioners and the disabled. I do not, however, have up-to-date detailed information on these schemes or on whether there are any schemes for the unemployed. There are also some commercially operated schemes. These include a scheme for reduced fares for the elderly operated by 18 European railways including British Rail which is open to the elderly of all the countries concerned.
