HC Deb 13 February 1989 vol 147 c96W
43. Mr. Adley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he has any plans to seek powers to provide funds for environmental protection on any railway works which he has approved.

Mr. Portillo

It is normal practice for British Rail to take appropriate environmental protection measures when they undertake new railway works. The costs involved form part of the total cost of the project for the purposes of establishing the case for the investment, and are financed in the same way as the rest of the project.
