Government Actuary's report on the teachers superannuation scheme for the period 1981 to 1986; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

As required under the Teachers' Superannuation Regulations I have arranged to lay the Government Actuary's report before both Houses today.

The report specifies a normal contribution rate of 13.3 per cent. and a supplementary contribution of 0.75 per cent.—a total of 14.05 per cent. The current contribution rates are 13.7 per cent. and 1.75 per cent. In accordance with the requirements of the regulations, therefore, there will be a reduction in employers' contributions of 1.4 per cent. from 1 April 1989.

The Government's plans for spending by local authorities on education, which I announced in November, assumed a reduction of about 1 per cent. in the rate of employers' contributions.
