HC Deb 10 February 1989 vol 146 c824W
Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people currently living in Great Britain have an immigration status which would subject them to the public funds test for income-related social security benefits.

Mr. Renton

The immigration rules require all overseas nationals coming to this country, except those with the right of abode and asylum seekers, to be able to maintain and accommodate themselves and any dependants or to be maintained and accommodated by a sponsor here without recourse to the public funds specified in the rules. The funds specified are those which are both means-tested and non-contributory.
