To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give the average annual percentage change in GDP(E), at 1985 prices, per head of the United Kingdom working population, including both employed and unemployed people, from(a) 1959 to 1979 and (b) 1979 to 1987 inclusive.

Between 1959 and 1979 the annual average percentage change in GDP(E), measured at constant factor cost, per head of the United Kingdom work force was 2.1 per cent. Between 1979 and 1987 the average annual percentage change was 1.0 per cent. Over both of these periods whole economy productivity rose on average by 2.1 per cent. a year.
