To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how many new businesses have registered on Merseyside for value added tax in each of the last three years.

The latest available figures for Merseyside provided by the Department of Employment are for 1986, when 2,918 new businesses registered for VAT compared with 2,905 in 1985 and 3,262 in 1984.
