To ask the Secretary of State for Health what percentage of the population is over 60 years(a) currently, (b) in 2000 and (c) in 2020.

The most recent estimate of the population of England and Wales indicates that at mid-1987 20.9 per cent. of the population of England and Wales was over 60. The Government Actuary's 1987-based projections indicate that the corresponding percentages for 2000 and 2020 are 20.4 and 23.7 respectively.
