HC Deb 07 February 1989 vol 146 cc579-80W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis about the level of complaints against the Haringey police from the Asian community; what steps are being taken to investigate these and improve police-community relations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the statistics of complaints are extracted from individual files when action on the complaint is complete. He further tells me that in 1987 action was completed on three complaints against the Haringey police involving Asian complainants. Action on six such complaints was completed in 1988.

All complaints against officers of the Metropolitan police are investigated in accordance with the procedures laid down in part IX of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the associated regulations.

The commissioner places the highest importance on good relations between his force and all sections of the community. His force is committed to a range of policies designed to this end.
