HL Deb 07 February 1989 vol 503 c1547WA
Baroness Gardner of Parkes

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What research there has been on the correlation between eyesight standards and road accidents.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

I have placed two key research documents from the Transport and Road Research Laboratory in the Library of the House:A Reanalysis of California Driver Vision Data and A Survey of Visual Acuity of Drivers. I have also placed a copy of a paper entitled Vision and Driving prepared by the Department's Medical Adviser.

These documents show clearly that defective eyesight is not a significant factor in road accidents for the general driving population as a whole.
