HL Deb 06 February 1989 vol 503 c1427WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether any of the egg producers who recently received compensation for the fall in the demand for eggs had ever been found to be supplying salmonella-infected feed to their hens.

Baroness Trumpington

Finished feedingstuffs including those fed to poultry are not routinely monitored for the presence of salmonella. It is not possible to say whether any of the egg producers who have benefited from the two short-term measures announced on 19th December have ever been found to be supplying salmonella-infected feed to their hens.

Guidelines on the control of salmonella in the production of final feed for livestock were issued last December and a detailed code of practice is in preparation. Proposals to require the monitoring of feedingstuffs for salmonella contamination are being considered.
