To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment by how many full-time equivalent employees the staff of St. Edmundsbury council has increased over the 12-month period to the latest count by his joint manpower watch; by what percentage this figure varies upwards or downwards from the national averages far shire county districts; and if he will make a statement.

The number of staff, full-time and part-time, employed by St. Edmundsbury district council increased by 34 ( + 4.5 per cent.) in the 12 months to September 1988. In this same period, the overall increase for non-met district councils was 83 employees (less than +0.05 per cent.). Full-time equivalent figures are not available at individual authority level.
