HC Deb 03 February 1989 vol 146 c414W
Mr. Dewar

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people in Scotland are in part-time work; what is the average number of part-time workers for each of the past 10 years; and what proportion these figures represent of the total work force in employment at the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. Rifkind

Information on part-time workers in Scotland for each of the past 10 years is available only for female part-time employees in employment. These estimates, given in the table, exclude part-time male employees, the self-employed and participants on work-related Government training programmes. For the years 1978, 1981 and 1984 the censuses of employment record some 0.06 million male part-time employees in employment. In September 1988 female part-time employees comprised 20.6 per cent. of all employees in employment in Scotland and 18.2 per cent. of the civilian work force in employment.
