Mr. Fisher

To ask the Minister for the Arts what representations he has received on plans to build a national theatre for dance on the south bank.

Mr. Luce

[holding answer 2 February 1989]None. The plans were put forward by the private sector.

Mr. Fisher

To ask the Minister for the Arts what information he has on the reasons for the withdrawal of plans to build a national theatre for dance on the south bank.

Mr. Luce

[holding answer 2 February 1989]I am informed that a bid was made for the county hall site, which included the building of a dance theatre; but another bid worth £20 million more from the County Hall Development Group was accepted by the London residuary body, under its statutory obligation to obtain the maximum benefit for the ratepayers, in June 1988.
