Mr. Dewar

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the population of Scotland at present; and what projections there are for how this will change over the next 10 years.

Mr. Rifkind

The registrar general's latest estimate of the population of Scotland, which relates to 30 June 1987, is 5,112,129. Projected populations based on this figure are given in the table.
