To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of staff in post in central Government Departments at 1 October.

On 1 October 1989 there were 565,075 staff in post in central Government Departments. Of these 497,294 were non-industrials and 67,781 were industrials. The figures for 1 April 1990 will be published next, when available.
