HC Deb 21 December 1989 vol 164 cc371-2W
Mr. Beith

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what action the Building Societies Commission has taken with regard to full distribution by the Guardian building society to its members;

(2) what advice the Building Societies Commission gave to the Guardian building society and the Cheltenham and Gloucester building society in respect of prudential matters relating to the proposed merger of the two societies;

(3) why the Building Societies Commission's advice to the Guardian building society in regard to the proposed merger with the Cheltenham and Gloucester building society had excluded the need for the Guardian building society to obtain an up-to-date valuation of its gross assets, including freehold property.

Mr. Ryder

[holding answer 19 December 1989]: I refer the hon. Member to the reply to two previous questions on this matter on 11 December 1989 at column 448.
