To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the basis on which the decision was taken to reduce the number of G4 posts in Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution from two to one.

There has been no reduction in the number of grade 4 posts on the staff complement of Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution.
