§ Mrs. RumboldNo information is at present available about the number of teachers with incentive allowances in September 1989. The Government's present plans assume the award of 174,600 allowances to teachers in ordinary schools in September 1989. Of these 38 per cent. (66,000) are A allowances, 30 per cent. (52,900) Bs, 11.5 per cent. (20,000) Cs, 15 per cent. (26,000) Ds and 5.5 per cent. (9,500) Es. If allowances were awarded in line with the Government's assumptions some 40 per cent. of primary and over 55 per cent. of secondary teachers paid on the main scale in England and Wales will have been in receipt of an allowance this September. Information from various sources suggests that the number awarded in previous years has been broadly in line with the Government's assumptions.
