HC Deb 19 December 1989 vol 164 c209W
36. Mr. Alton

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much money has been allocated for school maintenance and repairs over the past 12 months.

Mr. Alan Howarth

It is for individual local education authorities and, under local management, their schools to determine how much money should be allocated for school maintenance and repairs. The latest outturn data on recurrent spending show that in 1987–88 local authorities in England spent some £435 million on repairs and maintenance in primary and secondary schools.
