§ Mr. FraserTo ask the Attorney-General what posts in Government and the senior Civil Service are reserved to barristers.
§ The Attorney-GeneralThe duties of the Attorney-General and the Solicitor-General require that they be members of the Bar.
The only post in the Civil Service at present reserves to barristers is that of Permanent Secretary to the Lord Chancellor and Clerk of the Crown in Chancery. However the Courts and Legal Services Bill introduced in the House of Lords on 6 December would also enable solicitors and members of the Lord Chancellor's Department of the prescribed standing to be appointed to that post.
