Introduction of NADO Regulations 1980 on 1 January 1981 widened the accident categories.
Introduction of RIDDOR Regulations 1985 on 1 April 1986 further widened the accident categories.
Figures for 1984–85 cover a 15-month period which included a period of industrial dispute and as such are not comparable with any other year.
Provisional figures.
Excludes licensed coal mines.
Figures include accidents both to British Coal employees and to contractors.
Manshifts counted are only for British Coal employees and do not include manshifts worked by contractors. The rate per 100,000 manshifts is, therefore, higher than the true rate.
